Cataracts in the Springtime

Welcome Spring!

Temperatures will soon start to rise and robins will begin gathering in the yard. Every day we wish for the clouds to part, so that sun lurking just behind can break out and we can finally feel the full warmth of a new season.

Sadly, for people with cataracts, that magical moment when the clouds part and everything is illuminated stops coming. During formation of a cataract, the eye’s crystal clear lens becomes clouded, and the light striving to break through and enter the eye is blocked. The lens also hardens and yellows, and not only blocks but distorts the light we see.

Luckily, there’s more than one way to bring springtime to your vision.

Cataract surgery is a safe, proven method of returning clarity to clouded vision. During surgery, the eye’s natural cloudy lens is removed, and replaced with a crystal clear, synthetic lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). The entire procedure takes a matter of minutes to complete, and a majority of patients are able to return to work the next day following a post-operative check-up.

Patients with vision problems in addition to cataracts, such as astigmatism or near or farsightedness, have the option of also correcting those aspects of their vision during surgery. Patients can opt for a synthetic lens that gives more than just clarity at a single distance, freeing them from having to rely on glasses or contacts after surgery. At Katzen Eye Group, we offer a range of these premium lenses. During your consultation, your surgeon will be able to work with you to determine which lenses are right for your unique eyes.

If your vision is affected by cataracts, you don’t have to keep living behind the clouds. Contact our office to set up a consultation, and find out just how close your next sunny day could be.
