"I joined Katzen Eye Group to perpetuate my fathers vision of helping people and making a difference by working with patients to improve their vision and restore sight!"

Preparing to follow in his father’s footsteps, Dr. Brett Katzen obtained his undergraduate degree from University of Delaware, graduating magna cum laude in 1984. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1988 and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Brett officially joined the Katzen Eye Group in 1992, although he was a familiar sight at the practice long before then.

Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1993, Dr. Katzen serves as a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is specialty board certified in cataract surgery by The American Board of Eye Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. In addition, he has successfully completed The Wharton School, Executive Management Program, in 1996 and 2000.

Dr. Katzen is a leading force in laser vision correction. As a dedicated surgeon, he is devoted to the treatment of nearsightedness and farsightedness. He has been acknowledged for achievements in developing a specialized surgical instrument called the “Katzen Flap Unzipper,” commonly used with LASIK procedures throughout the United States. In addition, he has donated his surgical expertise by teaching and performing cataract surgery in Guyana, South America, Cuba, Israel, the United States and Europe.

Dr. Katzen is recognized by his patients and colleagues as a leader and innovator in cataract and implant surgery. He is on the forefront of the latest technological advances, including multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs), which frequently permit one to see near, far, and in between, without dependence upon glasses after cataract surgery. Dr. Katzen is nationally recognized for his expertise in correcting astigmatism (a condition in which one’s eyes are not perfectly spherical or round, resulting in less than adequate vision). With his use of lasers, special high tech IOLs, and innovative techniques, Dr. Katzen frequently corrects patients’ vision to better than they have ever seen – without glasses.
