Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a specialized area of ophthalmology that deals with conditions or abnormalities affecting the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system, orbit (bony cavity around the eye), and face overall.

Our ophthalmologists at Katzen Eye Group perform the following eyelid procedures:

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty ("eyelift") is an outpatient procedure that reduces excess fat and skin in the upper eyelids that, if left untreated, can interfere with normal vision. During the procedure, incisions are made along the contour of the eyelid crease to remove the fat. Incisions made are barely visible, leaving evidence that will fade over time.

Blepharoplasty is often recommended if a significant improvement in the visual field can be achieved.

Ptosis Repair

Ptosis, the drooping of the upper eyelid, is a condition affecting many individuals and can be found in one or both of the upper eyelids. When the level of the upper eyelid falls, vision can be obstructed, hindering daily activities. To repair, ophthalmologists make careful incisions to the upper eyelid crease and tighten muscles responsible for raising the eyelid.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty reduces excess fat and skin in the lower eyelids by making incisions (either inside or outside the lower lid) and removing the fat. Incisions made inside the eyelid are not visible; incisions outside the eye are barely visible and gradually fade.

Double Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Double eyelid blepharoplasty is a procedure that divides the upper eyelid into two sections. Ophthalmologists make incisions to the upper eyelid and remove segments of underlying muscle to form the desired eyelid crease.

Double eyelid blepharoplasty not only offers a cosmetic solution to those seeking this particular facial feature but may also be a solution for those with upper eyelids that are heavy and obstruct vision. In some cases, ptosis repair is also ideal.

Revisional Eyelid Surgery

Revisional eyelid surgery is a typically a solution for those who have had previous complications with plastic surgery and now require cosmetic and functional correction around the eyelids.

Depending on the damage, the necessary correction may involve a simple procedure or a complex eyelid reconstruction. An ophthalmologist can work with you to determine treatment best-equipped to help you regain normal function while also maintaining aesthetic outcome.
