Injectable Filler Questions
Baltimore and Lutherville, Maryland
What are injectable fillers?
Injectable fillers are an option for the cosmetic enhancement patient who wants a non-surgical approach to a younger looking appearance. Unlike BOTOX® which relaxes the muscle to temporarily reduce or eliminate wrinkles, dermal injectable fillers go in under the skin to restore the skin’s volume. Injectable fillers can add volume to thin lips, enhance shallow contours or soften wrinkles and creases in the face.
Is the procedure painful?
Before treatment begins, a local anesthetic will be applied. As with any injection, the process is not without pain, but is no worse than a pinch.
Can you give me samples of what others have achieved with the procedure?
Our eye doctors will show you before and after photos of previous cosmetic patient results to help you envision what the procedure will do for you giving you an idea of what to expect.
What types of injectable fillers are available?
Katzen Eye Group offers several brand name fillers to meet every need, including:
- Restylane® – a synthetic biodegradable hyaluronic acid in the form of a gel. This product binds to water molecules, resulting in a plump look to the injected area.
- Radiesse® – made of a substance naturally found in bone and other parts of the body. This product targets Nasolabial Folds and wrinkles around the mouth and nose.
- Juvéderm™ – a smooth consistency gel made of a naturally occurring substance in your skin (hyaluronic acid). This product helps to add volume and hydration.
How long does an injectable filler procedure last?
After the local anesthesia is administered, the injectable filler is placed under the skin, and the procedure is complete in 10 to 15 minutes.
What is the expected recovery time?
Only minor swelling, bruising, and redness are expected at the injection site. You can immediately return to work and other normal activities.

How long will the results last?
Length of results depends upon the product used. Botox® can last three to four months; while Juvéderm™ and Restylane may last up to six months, and Radiesse® from nine months to one year.
What are the risks, if any?
Fillers that contain hyaluronic acid offer the lowest risks and are less likely to create an allergic reaction. Longer-lasting fillers can cause bumps and lumps to form under the skin. Other risks can include: allergies, peeling skin, abscesses, infection, open sores and scarring.
