In 1968, Katzen Eye Group consisted of one doctor, Leeds Katzen, M.D., a secretary, and one non-paying patient — his father-in-law. "My secretary and I shared only one exam room," recalls Dr. Katzen, "She had to stop her work whenever I turned the light down to examine a patient."
From those humble beginnings in his office at Mercy Hospital, Dr. Katzen has expanded his practice with 16 doctors, and two state-of-the-art facilities in Towson and downtown Baltimore. Now the largest private eye care practice in Maryland, Katzen Eye Group has provided comprehensive eye care to all of the greater Baltimore Metropolitan area for four decades.
The philosophy of Katzen Eye Group has always been to care for the whole person by combining state of the art medical treatment with a warm and caring atmosphere. Dr. Katzen puts it best when he describes the practice as "High Tech, High Touch." The Katzen tradition of caring is also a family tradition as Dr. Katzen's son Brett joined the practice in 1991.
Katzen Eye Group has been renowned for pioneering achievements in ophthalmology. The first in Maryland and among the first in the nation to use intraocular lens implants for surgery, the doctors of Katzen Eye Group were also among the first ophthalmologists in the nation to utilize Phacoemulsification for the removal of cataracts. The YAG laser, another recent innovation, was first used for eye care in the United States by Katzen Eye Group. This special laser removes scar tissue that can impair vision following cataract surgery. Today, this laser procedure has become the standard in ophthalmology around the world.
As one of the first doctors in the country to perform surgery to correct nearsightedness (radial keratotomy), Dr. Katzen and his colleagues at Katzen Eye Group have been successfully performing refractive surgery procedures, since 1978.
